You will be picked up in the morning by a driver guide and head to the mountain Esja, which overlooks Reykjavik. Next we will reach Hvalfjordur fjords, which translates to “whale fjord” - enjoying towering snow capped mountains and open fields. After Hvalfjordur you will head on to Borgarfjordur, a region filled with historical heritage.
Reykholtsdalur valley is your next stop, with forces of Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring. The journey continues to the village of Reykholt, where famous poet and law maker Snorri Sturluson used to live during the Middle ages. Not far away there are two beautiful waterfalls, Hraunsfossar and Barnafoss. Hraunfossar are a series of streams rushing through dark lava fields and at Barnafoss you'll see bright blue stream speeding through a narrow ravine. We will then head to your accommodation for a restful sleep. Keep an eye out for the magical Northern Lights at night, especially if the skies are starry and clear.
Day 2 – Snaefellsnes Peninsula and The Journey to the Centre of the Earth
Sneafellsjokull glacier towers over the Peninsula in all its glory. The glacier played an important role in the novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth, by Jules Verne. You will enjoy a nice breakfast and then head out for an adventure - exploring volcanic undergrounds. You will visit Gerduberg Cliff, a large basalt column wall and the golden sandy beach of Ytri-Tunga. Moving on to Arnarstapi, a small fishing village surrounded by basalt ravines and lava pillars. You can explore old fisherman landing spots and the coast with the Atlantic Ocean waves crushing against Gatklettur arch rock.
Your next destination is Djupalonssandur, a black pebble beach, where you can trek unique field of lava pillars and rocks, a very special location, unlike anything else. When you reach the beach you can walk on the pebble shore and take in all the incredible features of the location. We then head to Vatnshellir lava cave - an exhilarating experience. In the cave you will follow a path of lava that was created over 8.000 years ago.
After you'll resurface from the lava cave we continue to explore the northern part of the Peninsula. The iconic Kirkjufell mountain will welcome you with all of it's majestic features. As you may know, the mountain appeared in the popular series, Game of Thrones and is one of Iceland's most popular sites in west Iceland. On our way back to the capital, we pass Hraunsfjordur, a beautiful fjord surrounded by mountains covered in snow, where you can see the dark lava field of Berserkjahraun. Remember to keep a look out for the magical sight in the sky as it gets dark, the Aurora Borelis may put on a show for you. That concludes your journey to West Iceland as we reach your accommodation in Reykjavik, come evening time, for some re-charging and relaxation.
Day 3 – The Golden Circle
On day 3 of your tour, you’ll get the chance to experience everything that the area has to offer - including geothermal spots, beautiful waterfalls, and our favorite locals. The Geysir geothermal area hosts hundreds of colorful hot springs and two geysers. The most powerful one called “Geysir”. Today, however, it is inactive and erupts very seldom. The other geyser “Strokkur” erupts every 5 to 8 minutes, sprouting water up to 40 meters up in the air.
Later we visit, Kerid Crater, a stunning volcanic crater with a lake in the middle which formed in an eruption 3,000 years ago. Kerid is the perfect location to learn more about Icelandic geological history and observe a mind-blowing natural wonder. Continuing our journey to Gullfoss Waterfall "Golden Falls”, the melting glacial water from Iceland’s second biggest glacier, Langjokull, falls into a deep canyon creating the majestic waterfall. On a sunny day you can also spot Langjokull glacier in distance.
Our next stop is Efstidalur - family owned farm since the year 1850. The Icelandic farm sticks to traditional farming methods and culture, mainly focusing on cows and cattle breeding. You will be able to enjoy their tasty farm-to-table dairy products, see stunning mountain views and get acquainted to their friendly animals.
Final stop for the day is Thingvellir National Park, the place where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet and are slowly but gradually moving away from each other. Few places in the world offer as rich history in geological activity as Thingvellir. Iceland biggest lake, Thingvallavatn, is also located nearby and hosts great variety of fish and bird life. Thingvellir is also renowned for having the oldest parliment in the world which was established 930 a.d.
Day 4 – The South Coast and Glacier Hike
The adventure begins with a visit to the beautiful waterfall of Seljalandsfoss. Bring a raincoat as you'll most likely be able to make the short walk behind the waterfall. Further east along the coast another stunning waterfall awaits you. Skogafoss is an incredibly powerful waterfall with a 60 meter drop into a small gorge. Alongside the gorge a staircase will take you to the shelf above the waterfall for stunning views all around.
Later, we will hike an outlet glacier spawning from Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajokull. After meeting our highly trained glacier guides, we strap on our safety and glacier equipment; including helmets, harnesses, crampons and ice axes and head on for a hike on the ice for an hour and a half. A spectacular experience and opportunity to learn all about ancient glacier. Skaftafell glacier area has been the set for many famous films & TV shows, such as Game of Thrones, Interstellar, View to a Kill, to name a few.
Arriving at our hotel in the South East coast, you will enjoy a dinner and then meet your guide for further information about the magical Aurora's. If conditions are favorable, the sky is clear and the forecast is good, your guide will search for a good spot to capture the famous Northern Lights.
Day 5 – The South Coast and Blue Ice Cave
Day 5 begins with comes Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, a 200m deep glacial lagoon fed by Breidamerkurjokull, an outlet glacier of Europe’s largest glacier. Enormous icebergs are constantly breaking off Breidamerkurjokull - so the lagoon is usually filled with floating ice bergs.
On the other side of the road the icebergs from Jokulsarlon, also known as Glacier Lagoon, float into the Atlantic Ocean where they are thrown back to shore by tide and winds. This black sandy beach, known as Diamond Beach, is full of smaller ice rocks in all shapes and sizes, sparkling like diamonds in the daylight. The ice itself comes in all shades, colors and forms, from white to blue - creating beautiful contrasts.
The journey continues with a super jeep ride to explore stunning blue ice caves. We recommend wearing waterproof hiking boots with hard sole and ankle covers. Iceland’s nature is dominated by glaciers and only safe to explore with a certified guide and all necessary safety equipment. Your guide will share his expertise about the ice caves, allowing you to truly appreciate this amazing natural phenomenon.
As we head further west, you’ll visit the black sandy beach of Reynisfjara where the Atlantic coastline presents massive waves hitting the unique basalt columns & cliffs. Sights of Dyrholaey can also be spotted in the distance. This area of the south is a paradise for bird lovers where unique species nest on top of these cliffs in the summertime.
The adventure ends when your guide drops you off to Reykjavik at designated location. Later you can head home to tell all tours friends about all the wonders that Iceland has to offer.
