Inside the Volcano
Ever wonder what a volcano looks like on the inside? This unique excursion takes you quite literally inside a dormant volcano. We enter through the top crater and descend to the bottom of its magma chamber, which was once filled with steaming hot lava.
Þríhnjúkagígur Volcano is the only spot on earth where it’s advisable to explore a magma chamber from the inside. The volcano has not erupted for 4.000 years and shows no signs of coming to life anytime soon, so it is safe to enter. The volcano is located approximately 25 minute from Reykjavik. Once we arrive, we will need to hike across a lava field in order to reach the crater- now you have entered the volcanic zone! The walk is moderate and typically takes 30-40 minutes. Employing a system used to carry window washers outside of tall buildings, you will be lowered 120 metres (400 feet) in an open elevator. All equipment and procedures have been tested extensively and approved by the administration of Occupational Safety and Health in Iceland- rest assured! No knowledge of hiking or climbing is needed. Distance Walked: Approximately 2,5 km (1.7 miles) each way. Groups will be small, so you will have the personal attention of your experienced guides.
